Map Resources on the Web
The list below is for free map resources on the Web. If you want to see print maps, go to the library and look on the atlas stands or browse in the call number area G 1105 - G 2800. If you want information on GIS, visit the subject guide.

- University of Texas Library Map CollectionOutstanding collection of online maps, local, national, international, and historical. Also try the "Cartographic Reference Resources," which leads to many useful geographic tools, such as gazeteers, distance calculators, and time zones.
- Maps on Other Web SitesThis is actually part of the above site, from U.T. Library. It lists dozens of links to a variety of map-related Web sites all over the world. An excellent resource.
- National Map ViewerAn interactive map from the U.S. Geological Survey. Different "layers" can be added to view such features as biology, land use, etc.
- Google Maps
- Mapquest
- Yahoo MapsThe above 3 commercial sites let you input data or to select from lists and see a maps or written directions. Information on U.S. is the most thorough. Most useful for travel directions, not for academic projects.
- AltapediaOffers both political and physical maps of the countries of the world or of the entire world.
- National Geographic Map Maker - 1-Page MapsYou can choose detailed or basic maps, with or without country borders. Designed to print out well. The Interactive option lets you add other features, such as volcanoes, population, etc.
- Library of Congress Map CollectionsLarge collection of online historical maps from the world's largest library. Divided into seven categories or you can search by keyword.
- Blank Outline Maps from About.comPrintable maps that just show the outlines of countries and states.
- National AtlasFrom the U.S. Government. All sorts of U.S. maps. Use the list near the top of the screen to select the kind of map, such as biology or transportation, and get a list of specialized maps.
- Color Landform Atlas of the United StatesState maps from satellite pictures. There are relief maps showing geological features and maps with the county outlines overlaid. There are also historic maps from 1895 for each state. From Johns Hopkins University.
- U.N. Cartographic SectionMaps of individual countries and of UN missions, such as Darfur.
- David Rumsey Map CollectionHistorical maps, mainly the Americas from 18th and 19th Centuries. Very nice images.
- Old Maps OnlineThis site lets you search several different online collections of old maps. A slide bar lets you narrow by time periods.
- Map GamesWhy not have some fun with maps? Several games to test your cartographic knowledge.
- Show WorldSelect either World, USA, or Japan, then select a topic. Maps showing the rank of the countries or states for it. For example, in World, you can show the rank of countries by map size that produce the most solar energy. Some quirky categories too, such as UFO sightings.
- Texas Digital Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970Unlike the other maps in this list, this is restricted to ACC users. If you're off-campus, you will use your ACC eID to access.
This has historic city maps from most towns in Texas, usually from a variety of years.
