Below are some common search terms and their variations for researching LGBTQIA+ issues and are examples which can be used as patterns in your own searching in the online catalog, in library databases, or on the Internet.  Keep in mind that terminology is constantly changing, with new terms introduced and others discarded in favor of a better descriptor.

Surveys, Reports, and Statistics

The Trevor Project's National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health captures the experiences of more than 34,000  LGBTQ youth ages 13 - 24 across the United States.  First launched in 2019, it one of the most diverse annual surveys of LGBTQ youth ever conducted. Results include data on anxiety and depression, access to care, impact of current events, discrimination, access to affirming homes and schools, and more.

 

                          America's LBGT Economy

America's LGBT Economy Report is the first ever snapshot demonstrating the economic and social impact of America’s leading LGBT business owners and entrepreneurs . This report released by The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce explores the types and sizes of LGBT-owned businesses currently certified by the NGLCC, the number of jobs they create, their geography, and the personal narratives of successful LGBT business owners who reflect the very best about America’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.

2021 Austin LGBT Chamber Impact Report

As a Chamber, we stood together successfully fighting back 76 anti- LGBT bills in the Texas Legislative session, and worked to have certified LGBT-owned businesses recognized by the City of Austin for procurement opportunities. We held our second annual Pride in Local Music event celebrating and amplifying the LGBT creative economy in both Austin and Nashville, and produced our largest ever Business of Pride Gala. The highlight of the gala was awarding awarded five scholarships to Central Texas students via our new Educational Fund.

While LGBTQ+ individuals cannot be fired from their jobs based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, harassment or mistreatment on the job remains prolific.

Understanding Issues Facing LGBT People in the US - 2nd Edition, June 2019

This is a short primer that summarizes the major areas in which unfair laws and stigma create extra burdens for LGBT people across the country. The guide also includes policy recommendations to address these harmful disparities and to improve the lives of LGBT Americans.

Report – Health and well-being among Indigenous trans, two-spirit and non-binary people

The Trans PULSE Canada project collected survey data from 2,873 trans and non-binary people in 2019. Of this number, 252 survey respondents indicated being Indigenous. This report presents results from the first national a/I-ages data on health and well-being among Indigenous trans, two-spirit, and non-binary people in Canada. Results highlighted that community belonging and participation in traditional activities or embracing a traditional identity are important factors connected to the health of Indigenous trans, gender-diverse, and two-spirit peoples.

Pride Around the World: 2022 Report from Outright Action International tracks the proliferation of Pride marches and other events aimed at LGBTIQ visibility around the world, including a focus on countries where Pride was celebrated for the first time in 2021 or where heightened repression made it impossible.
