ACC Library Services: Library Services in a Digital-First Academic Environment: Digital Fluency

Artificial intelligence (AI) is powerful, complex, ubiquitous, often opaque, sometimes invisible, and increasingly consequential in our everyday lives. Navigating the effects of AI as well as utilizing it in a responsible way requires a level of awareness, understanding, and skill that is not provided by current digital literacy or information literacy regimes. Algorithmic literacy addresses these gaps.

The article discusses the implications of using ChatGPT, an AI system, in academic settings, highlighting both its potential benefits and challenges. Topics include the potential of ChatGPT in aiding research, refining research questions, and generating citations, as well as the importance of teaching students to critically evaluate and use AI tools responsibly within the scholarly conversation.

For higher education students, developing digital literacy enhances their value to future employers and appeal in the graduate labour market. Findings highlight the need for increased focus on digital literacy adaptability and industry-relevant experience within curriculum.
