ENGL 1302 - Fall 25 - B. Villarreal: Paper One

Guide for Becky Villarreal's ENGL 1302 class

Paper One

For this paper, you will analyze one short story from the reading list (required or optional) in which you will make connections between the author and that story. You are required to integrate 2-3 scholarly, academic sources by researching the author's biography, using the literary criticism databases provided by the ACC Library.

For more information, refer to your instructor's class page.

Searching Tips

Need help finding sources for your paper? Make sure you're using the appropriate search terms! For example...

  • Putting an author's name in quotation marks can help make sure you only get articles or books on that specific person. Such as "Jane Austen" or "Ursula Le Guin".
  • Add the short story you're researching to your search as well to help narrow down the results especially if the author you chose is a prolific one, such as "Toni Morrison" and Sweetness
  • You can also search for specific themes in relation to your author, like "Edgar Allan Poe" and death or mortality.

Finding Books

Books are a great resource for finding in-depth information on your topic, since books are often written by subject experts. They help consolidate knowledge regarding the topic and present a foundational overview. You can find both physical books and e-books through the library: you can check physical books out from the library with your student I.D. and you can often download e-books to your computer (or tablet or phone) to read.

When you find a book, make sure to consider the author and the publication date: knowing how recent the book was written and if the author is an expert on the topic can help you determine whether the book is more useful or not for your research.

Here is a library catalog search for your convenience! Try title, author, subject, or keywords.
