This book club is designed as a collaborative space for faculty to move beyond apprehension and toward a proactive understanding of AI. We aim to explore its practical applications and theoretical implications, using Ethan Mollick's "Co-Intelligence" as our guide to becoming effective partners with AI in teaching, research, and professional development.
Week 1: Foundations of Co-Intelligence
Reading: Introduction to Chapter 3
We will introduce Mollick's core concept of "co-intelligence," discuss its meaning for educators, and share our initial thoughts, curiosities, and experiences with AI. This session establishes a common vocabulary and sets the stage for our collective experiment.
Week 2: The Four Rules of AI Collaboration
Reading: Chapters 4-6
A deep dive into Mollick's practical rules for human-AI collaboration. We'll explore the "Jagged Frontier" of AI's capabilities and discuss how to navigate AI "hallucinations" while applying these rules to our own work and disciplines.
Week 3: AI in the Classroom & Assessment
Reading: Chapters 7-9
This week focuses on the student experience. We'll brainstorm how AI can be a tool for learning and explore new approaches to assessment that embrace AI, such as process-based projects or AI-assisted assignments, rather than attempting to ban it.
Week 4: AI for Professional & Administrative Tasks
Reading: Chapters 10-12
We shift focus to our own professional lives, discussing how AI can increase personal productivity for research, administrative tasks, and communication. We will also consider the ethical responsibilities inherent in these new workflows.
Week 5: Looking Ahead & Building an AI Community
Reading: Conclusion & Reflection
Our final session synthesizes our learning. We will identify key takeaways and plan what comes next, with the goal of creating a community of practice that extends beyond the book club to help integrate AI thoughtfully across campus.
