VNG Project on Nursing and Culture: Finding Articles

Resources and tips for Level 1 Vocational Nursing students at Austin Community College working on the "Nursing and Culture" assignment

Introduction to Finding Articles

Searching for Articles - CINAHL

CINAHL Complete
(Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature)

The best source for magazine and journal articles on nursing topics

Try entering the following into a CINAHL search: (DE "Transcultural Nursing" or DE "Cultural Competence" or DE "Transcultural Care"). Then, use the word AND and the name of the culture you are studying. For example:

(DE "Transcultural Nursing" or DE "Cultural Competence" or DE "Transcultural Care") AND Native Americans

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition

This database also covers several nursing journals, although it's always best to start with CINAHL (see above). Use the same search strategy as described above.

Searching for Articles -- Pubmed for ACC

PubMed

Pubmed is a free national database from the national library of medicine. It's not a full-text database, but it does connect to free sources, and to sources available through ACC.

For a transcultural nursing search, try entering the following is entered in the search box:

("Cultural Competency"[Mesh] OR "Transcultural Nursing"[Mesh]) AND korea*

Of course, this search only works if your paper is about Korean culture. Substitute your culture and the search should work fine. The asterisk (*) ensures that you get results with all forms of the word after that point in the root word. (Korea, Korean, Koreans). I would only use this resource if you absolutely can't find anything in CINAHL Complete, though.

Keywords

Try the following search terms when searching for books and articles about nursing and cultures. Remember to use the asterisk (*) to get all forms of a word.

transcultural
cultur*
(culture, cultures, cultural)
ethnic*
(ethnic, ethnicity)

In the CINAHL periodical database, enter the following string of characters, then add the name of the culture you are studying:

(DE "Transcultural Nursing" or DE "Cultural Competence" or DE "Transcultural Care")

Cultural Competency Modules

One of our databases, Nursing Reference Center Plus has Cultural Competence Modules that describe specific areas of care like pregnancy, labor and deliver, patient education, and end-of-life care with the following ethnic and religious groups:

Thai

Chinese

Jewish

Amish

Filipino

Japanese

Black Americans

Korean

Puerto Rican

Appalachian
