Finding Book Reviews: What is a Book Review?

This guide will help you identify sources for book reviews and help you find them in the ACC libraries.

What is a Book Review?

What is a Book Review?

  • A review of a non-fiction book analyzes the book, pointing out the primary topics and/or arguments of the book and how well, or poorly, the author supports those assertions.
  • It's good if the author has some authority for writing the book.  Thus we expect a book review to cover an author's credentials for writing on the topic.
  • Usually book reviews compare the book being written about to similar titles on the topic.
  • Reviewers sometimes point out omissions they think should have been covered and any biases they noted.
  • Remember that a book review is usually published within a year or two of the book's publication.

Take a look at a few examples and then learn more about the library resources that were used to find them on the Helpful Library Resources page.
