SDEV 0111 Transition to College Success: 1. Find a Book

Introduction to the ACC Libraries- includes content from former course: HUDE 0111

Find a Book

The ACC Library catalog lists all the books, e-books, videos, magazine  titles,
and course reserves at all the ACC campuses.

It can be searched by author or title or by keyword (to look up a topic).

First, do a title search.

A. Type in the title:  How to Become a Straight-A Student.

How many campuses have this book?

What is the call number (the “address” on the shelf)?

B.  Now find one book on your topic in the catalog using a keyword search.

When you find a book that looks good, list it on your handout

Now go to the next tab above: 2. Find an Article.

3 Catalog Search Tips

1. Keyword search- the catalog automatically puts the word "and" between words. This lets you combine ideas, such as college AND procrastination.

If you want to do a keyword search for a phrase where the words are in order, use quotation marks around the phrase.

Example phrases:

  •  "test anxiety"
  • "standardized testing"
  • "video games"

2. Title search- if there is no exact match, you will go to an alphabetical list of titles that are the closest match. Sometimes you will see the title is slightly different than what you entered. You can also try searching for titles using keyword search. If you didn't have the title exactly right, keyword searches will sometimes find it.

3. Author search- type last name first

Example authors:

  • King, Stephen
  • Bronte, Emily
  • Grisham, John
