The New York Times: Academic Pass: Home

This is the guide for ACC faculty, staff, and students to learn more about their NYTimes.com Academic Pass.

Access NYTimes.com

Activate your NYTimes.com Academic Pass

Use the following links:

  • Activate your pass: Access NYTimes 
    • Search for "Austin Community College"
    • Select "Create Account"
    • Complete the sign-up form with your ACC email address
    • Check your email to validate your account and click the link in the message
    • Submit your details to redeem your pass: student or staff/faculty
  • When you see the "Start Your Access" screen, you have successfully registered.

After you register, you can access NYTimes.com from any network or location. 

NOTE: faculty/staff will need to repeat these steps yearly when their pass expires.

For Faculty: The New York Times in Education

An Academic Pass includes access to The New York Times in Education which provides the following features:

  • Discipline-specific areas of study
  • Classroom discussion prompts
  • Suggested learning outcomes
  • General Instructional Strategies to promote student achievement
  • Co-Curricular Activities, including events, discussions, and contests

To gain entry to the Education site (whether faculty, staff, or student), simply complete a short registration here.

Q. What is a NYTimes.com Academic Pass?
A NYTimes.com Academic Pass allows ACC faculty, students, and staff full access to the NYT website and most of its digital content and apps.

  • You need to have a valid ACC email address.
  • You must log in to or create an NYTimes.com account with that email address.

Q. What is included in the NYtimes.com Academic Pass?

  • Access to NYTimes.com and its archives (dating back to 1851)
  • NYT apps - for Apple, Android, and Kindle devices
  • Timesmachine - searchable, browsable page scans of every issue of The New York Times published between 1851 and 2002
  • Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality - found in the App; NYT stories told through enhanced technology
  • Daily 360 content - two dimensional, 360° views (with mobile device or using a mouse)
  • Podcasts (including the "Daily" podcast)
  • NYT Videos
  • Newsletters (there are a variety of topics that you may subscribe to)

Q. Why use a NYTimes.com Academic Pass to read The New York Times online?
The New York Times requires a paid subscription for full access to its website NYTimes.com; unsubscribed visitors may only read up to 10 free articles per month. Using a NYTimes.com Academic Pass gives you unlimited access to all of the content on the site, except for articles from 1923 to 1980, which are limited to five every 24 hours.

Q. What is not included?
NYTimes.com Academic Passes do not include e-reader editions, Times Insider content, digital versions of The New York Times Crossword, or NYT Cooking. NYT mobile apps are not supported on all devices.

Q. Can I access NYTimes.com from off-campus?
Yes, as long as you have previously activated your NYTimes.com Academic Pass via ACC's network. 

Q. What languages are available? 
NYTimes.com is available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Q. Can I access NYtimes.com from my mobile device?
A NYTimes.com Academic Pass provides full access to NYT apps; visit nytimes.com/mobile to download. Pass holders can also access NYTimes.com and INYT.com on any device (computer, smartphone, or tablet) with a browser. Mobile apps are supported by most devices.

Q. What are the restrictions?
You need to be connected to ACC's network to activate the NYTimes.com Academic Pass. Off-campus users can follow the instructions in the "Activate your NYTimes.com academic pass" box on the upper left side of the page to be authenticated by the ACC network. 

At this time articles from 1923 to 1980 are limited to five every 24 hours.

Q. I already have a paid ​Times digital or print subscription that gives me unlimited access to NYTimes.com. What should I do?
Existing users can register for access via ACC. To do so, you will need to cancel your paid subscription by calling NYT Customer Care (800) 591-9233. Once you have canceled, you can register using your existing NYT login credentials.

Q. Why am I asked to log in on some occasions and not others? 
This may be because your browser may clear its web cache/history if it is set to do so. In such cases you will need to log back into NYTimes.com, but you can still use your NYTimes.com Pass.

Q. How long is the pass valid for?
Students will have uninterrupted access until their anticipated graduation date and faculty/staff will be required to re-register annually.
