This chapter contributes to a vision of what could be possible and desirable for the future of the public service to inform people management policies as countries emerge from crisis, and presents a vision of a public service that is forward-looking, flexible and fulfilling to a diverse range of public employees, so that it is able to attract, retain and develop talent that can direct new technology and innovation to areas of pressing public need, and respond quickly to fast changing global circumstances.

Across the world, public services are rapidly being digitized. This article discusses potential remedies to ensure that digitalization does not affect the quality of public services as services and as places of employment. It spells out the additional measures that will be needed to fill the void ethically and ensure that fundamental human rights, freedoms, and autonomy are protected.
