Americans have been so primed by popular culture to distrust Artificial Intelligence/machines that the apocalyptic element here is practically a cliché—and yet somehow not a particularly realistic one until perhaps recently. There are other emerging technologies, however, that are equally dangerous, especially in the wrong hands: nanotechnology, biotechnology, synthetic biology, etc. Even Stephen Hawking was worried, noting in a 2016 opinion piece for The Guardian, “We now have the technology to destroy the planet on which we live, but have not yet developed the ability to escape it.” - Dr. Thomas
