Professor Uptmore's AI Policy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools may be used only as an editor in this course. This means you may use AI to help check grammar, polish language, or clarify your writing after you have completed your own original work.

AI should not be used to:

  • Write or generate speeches, outlines, or written assignments for you.
  • Conduct research or summarize sources in place of your own research.

All ideas, content, and research must be your own. If it is determined that AI has been used to complete work on your behalf, you will receive a zero on the assignment.

The goal of this policy is to help you build your own critical thinking, research, and communication skills; which are abilities that AI cannot replace. Using AI responsibly as a tool for refinement, not substitution, will ensure you get the most out of this course.

Understanding Generative AI

Text vs. image AI Text AI= language based (think: fancy autocorrect) Image AI= visual content generation (think, text to image) Idea generator, not fact-finder Great for brainstorming, not for accuracy Mind the hallucinations AI can sound confident...and still be totally wrong Ethics matter Consider privacy, bias, creative/intellectual property, environmental impact You’re still responsible AI ≠cheating tool, but it doesn’t replace your own thinking (it’s not good enough at that anyway!)
