ATF is a federal law enforcement agency in the United States Department of Justice whose stated mission is to "protect communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, the illegal use and storage of explosives, acts of arson and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products. diversion; firearms; explosives; and arson."

National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) is a federally funded resource offering justice and drug-related information to support research, policy, and program development worldwide.

Organized in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the DHS comprises 22 federal agencies brought together in attempt to coordinate federal security issues. Some of the criminal justice agencies included in DHS are the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, U. S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The Federal Judicial Center is the research and education agency of the judicial branch of the U.S. government.

The Crime Report (TCR) is an independent, collaborative effort by two national organizations that focus on encouraging quality criminal justice reporting, published by the Center on Media, Crime and Justice at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

Contains a myriad of information on death penalty issues, such as arbitrariness, race, juveniles, and mental illness. Statistics, state-by-state data, and links to other sites with opposing viewpoints are just a few of the resources available.

This commission was charged to explore the extent of violence and abuse in prisons and to offer solutions to make facilities safer for prisoners and staff.
