CHEM 1111 Lab (Collins): Choosing a Topic

This is the guide for Prof. Collins' Fall 2025 Chem 1111 lab.

Your Assignment!

Please do the following:

  1. Choose an Element from the Periodic Table
  2. Find 2 sources using the ACC Library
    1. ​reference work (encyclopedia, book, etc.)
    2. article from journal/magazine
  3. Write a 1.5 - 2 page paper using CSE citation style

Answer the following questions in your paper:

  1. Why did you choose this element? What is its significance to you?
  2. What are the basic properties of this element, including atomic number, molar mass, and density?
  3. What is the naturally occurring form of this element?
  4. Is this element a metal, non-metal or metalloid?
  5. Who discovered this element and when?
  6. What are the isotopes of this element and are any of them radioactive?
  7. What are some applications of this element? Are there medical, military, industrial, or environmental uses for this element?
