GOVT 2305 - Sinegal: Finding Acceptable Sources

Acceptable Sources

Your professor has created a list of acceptable resources you can use for your assignments. You must still evaluate these resources but they are a much better start than going into the wild web. Examples include:

  • Library books
  • Academic articles - found through the library. Check out the Finding Articles tab for more information.
  • Websites that end in .edu or .gov. Not allowed: .org.
  • Newspapers like the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and USA Today. The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal are free for current ACC students, faculty, and staff but you need to follow the steps, and use your ACC email address, to access.
  • National news sources like MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS or their local affiliates: KXAN, KVUE, Fox, etc.
  • Reputable research centers like the Pew Research Center and/or the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research from Cornell University.
  • Opinion poll organizations like Civiqs, Project FiveThirtyEight, Emerson College Polling, or the Marist Poll from Marist College. You may also find your information on other reputable polling sites.
  • Not allowed: Wikipedia, Citizendium, Fact Monster, Conservapedia, Info Please, Scholarpedia, Uncyclopedia, Ballotpedia, Investopedia, 270towin.com, Electoral Vote Map, or most websites that end in org.

Evaluating Information

No matter what source you use, you must evaluate it! Luckily, librarians have created a guide to check all potential sources. Find out more by completing the Evaluating Information tutorial or using the CRAAP test.

CRAAP Test

What is the CRAAP test?

The CRAAP test is a set of criteria designed by California State University, Chico to help you find the best sources for your school work. It is a good starting point for evaluating sources for academic purposes like papers, reports, and speeches. Use the following rubric to determine if the source you chose passes the test!
