What Are Open Educational Resources (OER)?

"Open Educational Resources are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others. OER include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge."  ~ William & Flora Hewlett Foundation

Open Educational Resources For Journalism

Textbooks:

Media, Society, Culture, and You- is an approachable introductory Mass Communication text that covers major mass communication terms and concepts including "digital culture." It discusses various media platforms and how they are evolving as Information and Communication Technologies change. This book has been peer-reviewed by 6 subject experts and is now available for adoption or adaptation. If you plan to adopt or adapt this open textbook, please let us know by filling out our adoption form.

Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship - This is the first edition of a modular open textbook designed for entrepreneurial journalism, media innovation, and related courses. This book has been undergoing student and faculty testing and open review in fall 2017. Feedback has been implemented in Version 1.0 and will continue to be implemented in Version 2.0 (ETA spring 2018). An accompanying handbook will include additional activities, ancillary materials and faculty resources on media innovation for instructors.

Writing for Strategic Communication Industries- Good writing skills are important in today's competitive work environment. This is especially the case for communication-related professions such as public relations, brand communication, journalism, and marketing. Writing for Strategic Communication Industries emphasizes practical application of academic inquiry to help readers improve their writing skills. Understanding Media and Culture: An Introduction to Mass Communication- According to the author, the world did not need another introductory text in mass communication. But the world did need another kind of introductory text in mass communication, and that is how Understanding Media and Culture: An Introduction to Mass Communication was birthed.


Courses:

edX: Journalism - edX offers several journalism courses that cover the process of gathering, assessing, creating, and presenting news and information. Browse online Journalism courses.

MIT Open Courseware: This course provides a critical analysis of mass media in our culture. Various types of media such as books, films, video games, and online interactions will be discussed and reviewed. This course will also evaluate how information and ideas travel between people on a large scale.

Saylor Academy - Principles of Human Communication - This course will introduce you to communication principles, common communication practices, and a selection of theories to better understand the communication transactions that you experience in your daily life.

Checkology: News Literacy Project - These lessons have Journalism-aligned content, such as Practicing Quality Journalism, The First Amendment, Be the Editor, Democracy's Watchdog, What is News? and Understanding Bias.
